Thoughtful English Nov 02, 2009 This is a great English primer. It is simple and easy to understand but covers a lot. It works great for students of all ages and abilities.
I really appreciated the lessons about commas. Proper placement of commas can be a big problem for many students. English for the Thoughtful Child provides clear rules that make it easy to understand comma placement.
I used this book while homeschooling my oldest daughter when she was about six. It worked great for us. Recently, I have used it with a highschool freshman who was struggling in English. It has been a big help. I covers all those areas that are usually trouble for students.
Not for everyone, but great for us! Oct 31, 2008 This book is a great supplement to any language/grammar program. I use it along with Easy Grammer: Daily Guided Teaching & Review for my second grade son. Of course, I modify it to our needs. There are many more exercises or sentences than I feel we need. Sometimes I may have my child narrate his answers to me rather than writing them. Anyone with a son understands how boys generally do not like to write. However, my son actually likes this program. I believe because of it's varied content. As I said, it is a great supplement to our teaching. I just use the portions I like/need and discard the rest.
Simple but good!! Oct 19, 2008 This book is very basic and simple but it is effective (so far). I can't wait to get deeper into the lessons to see if their comprehension and composition skills will increase. I'm a homeschooler who is big on foundation so I think this book might be a good match for us. My son hesitates when he has to repeat back what he read but this seems to be written to help avoid that. It is also crucial that parent reinforce what the children learn. This is my first time using this book and hopefully, I will be glad I did!!! I also use another book called Comprehensive quickies and the Five W's by remedia publishers, they are for children with learning disabilities but I find the stories effective, short, sweet and too the point for young readers.

Not for us Jan 11, 2007 We bought this on the recommendation of The Well Trained Mind book by Susan Wise Bauer. I liked how inexpensive it was compared to other grammar programs, and I figured it would not require a lot of prep. on my part. Other than that, I found this book to be tedious and boring. My 7 year old dreaded it. The dictation exercises, where I read sentences that meant nothing to him, while he wrote them down, was like pulling teeth. I appreciated the narration exercises, and he was improving on that skill by the end of the book. But asking him to tell me about some picture or memorize a poem he doesn't care about (we memorize other things instead, like Bible verses and Baptist Catechism questions and answers), just seemed pointless to me. We finished the book, but it only took us one semester since we started skipping lessons I thought were useless. I've since bought the Abeka third grade language curriculum and love it. Call me more structured, but grammar is going much better now. I would not recommend this book to anyone--and I know the updated edition of The Well-Trained Mind recommends one of the author's books, First Language Lessons for Children, so maybe that's an improvement on English for the Thoughtful Child.

Simply the best for Charlotte Mason learning! Oct 07, 2006 For those truly desiring a Charlotte Mason approach to English, this is a delightful book! It is not like your average language arts/grammar book! It is gentle and sweet and really encourages your child to use writing and narration skills in a fun, non-workbook way. Perfect for children 2nd or 3rd grade and up. Tho this book does have a suggested grade level of 2nd, I found that it was perfect for my 3rd grade son and am finding that my 6th grade son is even gleaning some things from this as a result! So really, it is perfect for the elementary grades!! Easily enjoyed as a family! Again, absolutely perfect for the Charlotte Mason homeschooling family! :o) Definitely wonderful! :o) Please note: Volume 1 of this book has a blue/green cover. It is Vol. 2 that has the orange/yellow cover. :o)
